  • Geography & Climate

    The Alsace plain occupies the southern part of the Rhine Valley. The vineyards are located on the foothills of the Vosges mountains, in the fractured zone. The soil varies greatly, ranging from limestone, granite, shale, gneiss, to sandstone.

    The alluvial zone along the banks of the Rhine is very fertile. Here, the Alsace and Crémant d'Alsace AOC wines are produced. The vineyard plots are steep and rise 478 meters above sea level. In the floodplain areas, there are layers of limestone and marl in areas where the slopes are less pronounced, and this is where the Alsace Grand Cru wines come from. To the west, the Vosges mountains provide protection against winds and rainfall. The spring is warm, summers become dry and sunny, autumns are long, and winters are cold.

    It is the region in France with the lowest rainfall. The climate is temperate and continental. In total, the vineyard area is approximately 15,000 hectares, divided between 8,800 hectares in Upper Alsace and 6,200 hectares in Lower Alsace.
