"Putting dreams back at the center of the world, those of our unconscious innocence, the ones that open up all horizons!"
This is a small vineyard of 7 hectares located in Bergheim and managed by Mathieu DEISS, son of Jean-Michel DEISS. These few plots, inherited from his maternal uncle and situated in a terroir less expressive than that of Marcel DEISS' estate, have become his laboratory for expressing grape varieties. He works with Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Noir.
The vines are 45 to 50 years old and are cultivated according to the principles of biodynamic production, with the wines being certified DEMETER.
The varied landscapes of Alsace are the legacy of a turbulent geological history that spans almost one billion years. The sedimentary deposits from the primary and secondary eras, whether marine, continental, or lagoon, cover the ancient magmatic rock base.
At the end of the Jurassic period, the region underwent volcanic activity followed by an erosive phase that lasted for 100 million years. In the Tertiary era, tensions and fractures led to subsidence and subsequent collapse of the key stone of the Rhine block along with its sedimentary cover.
The alluvial plain occupies the center of the trench where the Rhine fault is concealed. Above the collapsed secondary lands, the marine lands from the Tertiary period, which are between 2,000 and 2,500 meters thick, are in turn covered by the Quaternary alluvium from the Vosges and Rhine rivers. It is on this soil that the vineyards of VIGNOBLE DU RÊVEUR are planted, in the large alluvial cones of the rivers but also in the loess deposits brought by the wind.
The nature of the materials depends on the course of the rivers. Their mineral fertility is low, and the presence of loess improves the quality of the soil. The daily sunshine duration is long, which is beneficial for viticulture as long as there is sufficient water available in the soil.
In this small vineyard located in a less expressive flat terroir compared to the hillside vineyards, Mathieu invents, innovates, blends grape varieties, and sometimes vinifies in sandstone or clay jars, and sometimes in barrels or tanks, creating wines with a unique flavor. His winemaking is intended to be as simple and non-interventionist as possible. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts. Wines vinified in jars are not sulfured, while those vinified in tanks or barrels are lightly sulfured if necessary. The wines undergo a light filtration.
The wines of Vignoble du Rêveur are produced in the same cellars as the ones where the DEISS family produces their great terroir wines - there are no separate facilities for the two vineyards.
"Born from a desire for independence and freedom, Vignoble du Rêveur is a new chapter in the history of our maternal grandfather's vineyard.
Without buying grapes, only the truth of the grapes from our own vineyard; in short, the dream of a farmer!
Throughout his life, our grandfather fought for his independence, his one true freedom! Serving this vineyard today is a tribute to this struggle, to this ideal, and an extension of his Dream. To rebuild this dream, to rebuild a future without constraints, to reinvent wine in its own definition, to break the codes, to tear down the walls and open our eyes wide, to say that anything is possible!"
