BARBACÀN

Barbacán is Angelo Sega and his sons Luca and Matteo.

They cultivate Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) and other ancient varieties of Valtellina on 6 hectares of terraced vineyards in San Giacomo deTeglio, at altitudes of around 450 meters. They are Alpine farmers, preserving the diversity of ancient native vineyards and the cultural identity of traditional agricultural practices. Each season, they repeat ancient gestures, continuing the identity of an Alpine people who have always been connected to the cultivation of Chiavennasca. The wine expresses the harvests, with their peculiarities and balances, always different and always unpredictable.

  • The wines are as natural as possible, respecting the terroir and the harvests. The fermentations are spontaneous, the wines are not fined or filtered, and only minimal doses of sulfites are added at bottling.

  • The attention given to every detail and the minimal interventions in the cellar generate unique products of extreme delicacy, flavor, and elegance.

Curiosities

"In the vineyard, we observe what nature communicates to us: the melting of snow on the mountains, the ripe hay in the meadows at the bottom of the valley, the spring of water emerging from the rock. Each message is a precious source for us, guiding us to act according to what those who came before us taught us.
In our wines, we express the harvests with their peculiarities and their balances, always different and always unpredictable. Each season, we repeat ancient gestures, carrying forward the identity of an alpine population that has always been connected to the cultivation of Chiavennasca."

  • Winemaking

"We believe in natural viticulture, where man and his wisdom serve the land, without pretense or artifice. We are farmers in the Alps, preserving the pluralism of our ancient native vineyards and the cultural identity of traditional agricultural practices."

  • HISTORY

This small producer is a true stronghold of artisanal identity in the heart of the Alps, in northern Italy.
At these heights, with steep slopes and rugged terrain, working the land and vineyards is what Italians call "Heroic Viticulture," due to the tremendous and hard work in the vineyards, where everything is done manually.

Most of the vineyards were planted by Matteo's grandfather, Angelo, in 1923.
Today, it is Matteo who makes the vineyards "dance" daily, resulting in the production of approximately twenty thousand bottles annually.
